The summaries below describe two different approaches, or alternative ways, the state of West Virginia offers homeschooling families to meet state compulsory education requirements.  Approach 1

 
 Approach: Homeschool with school board approval
   
 Restrictions: Seek local school board approval. Be deemed qualified to teach by the local superintendent and school board.
   
 Reporting: As part of local school board approval
   
 Recordkeeping: As prescribed during the approval process
   
 Requirements: Subjects required under discretion of school board. Attend for a time equal to the school term of the county, generally 180 days.
   
 Testing: None unless specified by school board
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children who are 6 by September 1 of the school year until their 16th birthday.

Approach 2

 
 Approach: Establish and operate a homeschool
   
 Restrictions: Submit evidence of high school diploma or equivalent
   
 Reporting: File notice of intent with the county board of education. If child is in public school, must file two weeks prior to start of homeschool program. Must include a plan of instruction, information on children including name, address, age and grade level, and evidence of high school diploma.
   
 Recordkeeping: None
   
 Requirements: Subjects required for testing include reading, language, mathematics, science and social studies
   
 Testing: Submit by June 30 an assessment to superintendent, consisting of (1) any nationally normed standardized test published within the past 10 years; (2) a portfolio reviewed by a certified teacher; (3) participate in the testing program currently in use in the state’s public schools; or (4) any alternative assessment agreed to by the superintendent.
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children who are 6 by September 1 of the school year until their 16th birthday.
