 Approach 1

 
 Approach: Establish a homeschool which has been approved by the local school committee
   
 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required, but must show you are able to provide “thorough and efficient” instruction
   
 Reporting: As part of approval process
   
 Recordkeeping: You must keep attendance records and test scores, if agreed upon between parent and school committee
   
 Requirements: Subjects required include reading, writing, geography, arithmetic, history of the United States, history of Rhode Island, principles of American Government, English, health and physical education. Also, beginning with fourth grade, history and government of Rhode Island must be taught. In high school, the U.S. Constitution and Rhode Island Constitution must be taught.Attend the same number of hours public school is in session, generally five and one half hours per day, for at least 180 days per year.
   
 Testing: Parent and the school committee agree on a way of evaluating child’s progress which may consist of testing.
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children who are 6 by September 1 of the school year.
