Our summary below describes the overall picture of homeschooling requirements in the state of Oregon. Additional and more extensive help can be found within our e-book: Oregon Homeschool Legal Workbook: Your Guide to Compliance - Facts & Forms, prepared by HomeSchoolLegal.com.

 Approach 1

 Approach: Establish a homeschool

 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required

Reporting: Submit an initial notice of intent to homeschool, in writing, to local EDS (education service district), within 10 days, when either withdrawing a child from public or private school, or before initially homeschooling a child who will be 7 years old as of September 1. If moving to another EDS in Oregon, submit a notice of intent to new district in the same way. Further notice not required.

 Recordkeeping: None

Requirements: The course of study generally taught in the public school, K-12

Testing: Approved comprehensive testing, administered by a certified tester, not related to the student, required by the end of grades 3, 5, 8, and 10. If child was withdrawn from public or private school, testing is required within first 18 months after homeschool begins. Children diagnosed with a disability by a medical or other professional may be assessed according to child’s public or private IEP.

Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children between the ages of 7 (on or before September 1) and 18 years who have not completed the 12th grade

Source of Law: Oregon Revised States (2005) and Oregon Administrative Rules
