Our summary below describes the overall picture of homeschooling requirements in the state of Minnesota. Additional and more extensive help can be found within our e-book: Minnesota Homeschool Legal Workbook: Your Guid to Compliance - Facts & Forms, prepared by HomeSchoolLegal.com.

 Approach 1

 Approach: Establish a qualified homeschool

 Restrictions: Home teacher must comply with one of the six options for being qualified as an instructor:(1) Hold a valid Minnesota teaching license in the field and for the grade level taught;(2) Be directly supervised by a person holding a valid Minnesota teaching license;

(3) Successfully complete a teacher competency examination;

(4) Provide instruction in a school that is accredited by a state recognized accrediting agency;

(5) Hold a baccalaureate degree; or

(6) Be the parent of a child who is assessed yearly on a nationally norm-referenced standardized achievement examination.

 Reporting: File a notice with local superintendent by October 1 of each school year including the name, birth date and address of each child receiving instruction.

 Recordkeeping: If teaching parent does not meet any of the criterion above, submit a quarterly report to the local superintendent showing the achievement of each child in the required subjects.

 Requirements: Subjects required include reading, writing, literature, fine arts, math, science, history, geography, government, health and PE.

 Testing: Testing Required. Each year, the performance of every child enrolled in a nonpublic school must be assessed using a nationally norm-referenced standardized achievement examination. The specific exam used, method of administration, and location is to be determined through a mutual agreement between the superintendent of the district in which the child receives instruction and the person in charge of the child’s instruction.

 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to students between 7 and 16 years of age

 Source of Law: Minnesota Statutes Annotated, Section 120A
