Homeschooling in Louisiana
The summaries below describe two different approaches, or alternative ways, the state of Louisiana offers homeschooling families to meet state compulsory education requirements. Additional and more extensive help can be found within our e-book: Louisiana Homeschool Legal Workbook: Your Guide to Compliance - Facts & Forms, prepared by HomeSchoolLegal.com.
Approach 1 |
|
| Approach: | Establish an approved homeschool |
| Restrictions: | Teacher certification not required |
| Reporting: | File an application within 15 days after the start of homeschool with the board of education, along with a copy of the child’s birth certificate. Application must be renewed annually by October 1 of the school year or 12 months after initial approval, whichever is latest. |
| Recordkeeping: | Submit documents showing satisfactory evidence that the program is at least equal to that offered by the public schools. The loan of public school textbooks is available to homeschool students. |
| Requirements: | Subjects required must be at least equal to the quality of the public schools. State guidelines are available at the Department of Education website. Attend 180 days. |
| Testing: | Upon renewal, submit documentation showing proof that program is equal to that offered by the public schools, via testing or teacher review of progress. |
| Compulsory Attendance: | Applies to children from their 7th birthday until their 18th birthday. |
| Source of Law: | Louisiana Revised Statutes, Title 17 |
