Homeschooling in Kansas

The summaries below describe two different approaches, or alternative ways, the state of Kansas offers homeschooling families to meet state compulsory education requirements.  Approach 1

 
 Approach: Establish a homeschool as a non-accredited private school.
   
 Restrictions: Teacher must be “competent.”
   
 Reporting: Merely register name and address of school with the state board of education, referring to your school as a private school.
   
 Recordkeeping: None
   
 Requirements: Specific subjects not required for non-accrredited private schools. Attendance equivalent to the public school, or 186 days per year, with days of 6 hours in length.
   
 Testing: None
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children who have reached the age of 7 and are under the age of 18, or at age 16 with parental consent.

 Approach: Establish a homeschool as a satellite of an accredited private school.
   
 Restrictions: Teacher must be “competent.”
   
 Reporting: As required by supervising private school
   
 Recordkeeping: As required by supervising private school
   
 Requirements: As required by supervising private school
   
 Testing: As prescribed by supervising private school
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children who have reached the age of 7 and are under the age of 18.
