Homeschooling in Delaware

The summaries below describe three different approaches, or alternative ways, the state of Delaware offers homeschooling families to meet state compulsory education requirements.  Approach 1

 
 Approach: Establish a homeschool
   
 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required
   
 Reporting: Submit annually, before October 31, statement of pupil enrollment as of last day in September on prescribed forms. Report end-of-year attendance information annuals on or before July 31 on prescribed forms.
   
 Recordkeeping: None, other than attendance as above
   
 Requirements: Attend 180 days per year. Subjects required as in public schools.
   
 Testing: Not required
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children between 5 and 16 years of age. Can be delayed with school authorization.

Approach 2

 
 Approach: Enroll in a “multi-family homeschool” where one person shall act as a liaison to the Department of Education for reporting enrollment and attendance information for all families involved.
   
 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required.
   
 Reporting: Submit annually, before October 31, statement of pupil enrollment as of last day in September on prescribed forms. Report end-of-year attendance information annuals on or before July 31 on prescribed forms.
   
 Recordkeeping: None required, other than attendance as above.
   
 Requirements: Attend 180 days per year. Subjects required as in public schools.
   
 Testing: Not required

 Approach: Maintain a single-family homeschool coordinated with the local school district
   
 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required but curriculum must be approved by the local superintendent.
   
 Reporting: Submit annually, before October 31, statement of pupil enrollment as of last day in September on prescribed forms. Report end-of-year attendance information annuals on or before July 31 on prescribed forms.
   
 Recordkeeping: None required, other than attendance as above.
   
 Requirements: Attend 180 days per year. Subjects required as in public schools.
