Homeschooling in California

The summaries below describe four different approaches, or alternative ways, the state of California offers homeschooling families to meet state compulsory education requirements. Approach 1

 Approach: Establish a private school
 Restrictions: Teacher must be “capable of teaching”
 Reporting: File annual private school affidavit between October 1-15 containing this information: http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/cd/psfaq.asp#psfaqs3
 Recordkeeping: Maintain an attendance register and copy of affidavit
 Requirements: Specific subjects same as public school, and in English. For Grades 1-6: English, mathematics, social sciences, science, fine arts, health and physical education. For Grades 7-12: English, social sciences, foreign language, science, mathematics, fine arts, and applied arts. Attend 175 days per year, 3 hours per day, between 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
 Testing: Not required
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies by the 6th birthday in the year in which the child turns 6 on or before December 2nd and under 18 years of age

Approach 2

 Approach: Hire a private tutor
 Restrictions: Teacher certification required
 Reporting: None
 Recordkeeping: None
 Requirements: Subjects required must be the several branches of study taught in the public schools and in English. Attend 175 days per year, 3 hours per day, between 8 am and 4 pm
 Testing: Not required
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies by the 6th birthday in the year in which the child turns 6 on or before December 2nd and under 18 years of age

 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required
 Reporting: As required by program
 Recordkeeping: As required by program
 Requirements: As required by program
 Testing: As required by program
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies by the 6th birthday in the year in which the child turns 6 on or before December 2nd and under 18 years of age

 Restrictions: Teacher must be “capable of teaching”
