Homeschooling in Alaska

The summaries below describe five different approaches, or alternative ways, the state of Alaska offers homeschooling families to meet state compulsory education requirements. Approach 1

 
 Approach: Establish a homeschool
   
 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required
   
 Reporting: None required
   
 Recordkeeping: None required
   
 Requirements: No specific subjects required. Attendance not specified, but 180 days required for public school.
   
 Testing: Not required
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children between the ages of 7 and 16. A child who is 6 years old and enrolled in public school is subject to compulsory attendance, but may be withdrawn from public school within 60 days of enrollment.

 Requirements: Program must be approved by the Department of Education. Attendance not specified, but 180 days required for public schools.
   
 Testing: Not required
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children between the ages of 7 and 16

 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children between the ages of 7 and 16

Approach 5

 
 Approach: Register homeschool as a “religious or other private school”
   
 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required
   
 Reporting: File “Private and Denominational School Enrollment Report” with Department of Education by the first day of public school.
   
 Recordkeeping: Maintain attendance records, record of courses taught, standardized testing, academic achievement and physical exams. By October 15, file enrollment report and school calendar.
   
 Requirements: Subjects not required
   
 Testing: Testing is required. Administer a nationally standardized test that measures achievement in English, grammar, reading, spelling and mathematics in grades 4, 6, and 8.
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children between the ages of 7 and 16
