Homeschooling in Alabama

The summaries below describe two different approaches, or alternative ways, the state of Alabama offers homeschooling families to meet state compulsory education requirements. Approach 1

 
 Approach: Establish or enroll in a church school
   
 Restrictions: Teacher certification not required
   
 Reporting: File notice of enrollment and attendance upon initial enrollment with local superintendent on a provided form. Notify state if child withdraws from church school.
   
 Recordkeeping: Maintain a daily attendance record to be kept by school
   
 Requirements: Subjects not required. Attend a suggested 175 days per year.
   
 Testing: Not required
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children between the ages of 7 and 16

Approach 2

 
 Approach: Hire a private tutor
   
 Restrictions: Teacher certification required
   
 Reporting: File statement with local superintendent that shows children to be instructed, subjects taught and period of instruction.
   
 Recordkeeping: Maintain a register of the child’s work showing daily attendance and make such reports as the state board of education may require.
   
 Requirements: Subjects required include reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic, English, geography, history of the United States, science, health, physical education, and Alabama history.
   
 Testing: Not required
   
 Compulsory  Attendance: Applies to children between the ages of 7 and 16
